              1. Meanwhile, in South Korea, there has been an upswing in online discussions about helping refugees: on discussion boards, you can now see people w/o a previous interest now saying that Korea should accept more refugees because of the current situation in Ukraine. But... @gordsellar/1499750147563352066

... it's hard not to notice the contrast between S. Korea's surging pro-Ukraine support with the absurd, overwhelming degree of hostility toward Black/Muslim refugees in recent years. (A handful of Yemenis coming legally in 2018 set off a moral panic.) mei.edu/publications/south-koreas-yemeni-refugee-problem

This crisis was basically only resolved by the government saying semantic games and letting them stay on a temporary "humanitarian visa", but not really giving them refugee status. koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20190217000042

(We should likely expect these kinds of face-saving pseudolegal not-refugee-but-sorta semantic games to become more popular across the global north as numbers of refugees increase in coming years and resources get tighter/voters get more hostile toward aylum seekers.)

Anyway, according to this very recent paper on Syrian refugees in Seoul, only a little more than half of Koreans support taking refugees of any kind. Only a bit more than a quarter support taking Muslim refugees, though. link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s10901-021-09927-9

The paper argues what's been evident all along: refugees who "fail to integrate" often do so because they lose the motivation when living with hostility, exclusion, discrimination, and imposed precarity. If you want refugees to integrate, maybe don't treat them like garbage?

It's also an interesting read in itself, just as a glimpse into another smaller expatriate population in Korea with a very different experience of this place... and yet with some actually surprising points of overlap.

Anyway, it's mostly academic: European neighbours are taking all the Ukranian refugees they can, while Ukranian military and cops are apparently telling Black (and other nonwhite?) foreign students they must stay and fight the Russians. FFS. 🙄

And because it shouldn't be forgotten, numerous (Arabic-speaking) refugee asylum seeker's testimonies were manipulated by translators to distort their claims and ruin their asylum request evaluations. nancen.org/1957 english.hani.co.kr/arti/english_edition/e_national/1022348.html
