                1. I actually remembered a dream on waking this morning! I visited some guy's basement recording studio. He was a hoarder. He had hundreds and hundreds of thousands of dollars of gear there, amid trash bags and piles of instruments. He said his dad bought it for him.

I picked up a bass mandolin (not an octave mandolin, which I have, but some kind of weird hollow-body electric "bass guitar" mandolin thing) and started playing a funky bass line. He recorded it.

I asked him to play it back, though, and he got all cagey and weird. I went across teh grubby carpet to the mixing board, and tried to find how to turn up the monitor speakers. A small bug crawled out of the mixing board onto my hand. It was that filthy down there.

Finally, I found the slider for the studio monitors and brought up the sound, and hit play. But he hadn't actually recorded my mandobass thing. It was a recording of himself playing singing some pop tune off-key, backed by a drum machine and himself struggling w/guitar chords.

I stood there, simultaneously sad for him because it was awful and he needed it so badly to be good, and also so incredibly envious: he had so many instruments and couldn't play them, so much gear he couldn't properly use, and it was crawling with bugs.

I am pretty sure a part of this is that I'm resigning myself to putting off getting the looper pedal I was supposed to get this spring. It's perfect for what I need, and even works as an audio interface, but stuff's so uncertain right now. It can wait. (Sigh.)

In the meantime, I have a few MIDI controller pedals I can try get back into working order. It's a job of work: hard to get the internal battery replacements here, and electronics fixit guys seem thinner on the ground in my small S. Korean city.

(I feel like old gear just gets junked here, instead of sold/auctioned off, refurbished, and resold for cheap like back home.) So I guess that's something to keep me busy and learn till the looper pedal is feasible.

BTW Mandobasses are a thing, but they're not like the funky bass guitar thing in my dream. I have never played one. (I would love to but they're rare and expensive and a contrabass or maybe a cheap bass guitar are much likelier in my future, if anything.)
