    1. I remember when it was just called 닭도리탕 and angry nationalist dudes were the only ones who called it weird, made-up names like 닭볶음탕 or 닭매운탕. Said angry, nationalist dudes sometimes shouted at anyone who used the word. Even me, when I was just reading it off a menu.

(Their shoutiness led me to suspect that it probably was just folk etymology, like some people said. People with solid proof don't usually shout and insult... they don't have to.) But they won that culture battle and now my students all seem to call it 닭볶음탕...

I am happy to see that my favorite restaurant in the country (which specializes in this dish, and is down in Jeonju) still uses the old name. It was run by a bunch of older women who clearly didn't take nobody's guff. m.blog.naver.com/lisso1234/222050604057

(That was a once-or-twice-a-year place to visit for a meal, at least till the pandemic. I highly recommend it, when the time comes, if the place is still around. I sure hope it is.)

And to be clear, I have no idea whether it's a folk etymology or not. It's just that the only people arguing it back in the early oughts were so insufferable about it. (Imagine shouting at someone for correctly reading one menu item in a foreign language, because "politics!")
