@kimhanolkim No, this is my point: we're not allowed to register a name in Hangeul. "It must match the passport." And so my name is 21 roman characters long (plus spaces), longer than most sites are programmed to accept. I asked Daejeon Immigration and the answer basically, "Eh, no."

@kimhanolkim They said I could petition the Ministry of Immigration, but also told me the rule is that registered name must match passport. When I said, "My passport name is too long," they said, "But the law..." They *clearly* didn't care that this causes problems for resident non-Koreans.

@kimhanolkim Frankly, I mostly gave up years ago on trying to get things fixed here. It will get fixed when enough Koreans care. I am not holding my breath, though: I don't think any but a tiny minority will really care about equality of access until decades from now...

@kimhanolkim ... and they won't be the ones with the power to fix this. Besides, this is little known, but there are other inequalities far more widely known about that people don't see as wrong, so I doubt there'll be any change on this. *shrug*

@kimhanolkim But sooner or later, the disincentives will add up to "too much" for enough people that it'll affect immigration patterns. I mean, already the law is starting to discourage biracial children living here beyond a certain age, or returning before they're too old for army.

@kimhanolkim And, seriously, given the birth rate, Korea doesn't need barriers to qualified, skilled people moving here, especially not now. But the barriers keep building up. Or maybe it's just my frustration that's built up, dealing with such a broken system for so very long.
