Okay, I guess the story that John Norman wrote the worst possible novel on a bet (Gor) is probably apocryphal: this interview suggests Norman was really just spewing his own crazy, bizarro beliefs re: women needing enslavement. curtisagency.com/blog/2011/10/an-in-depth-interview-with-john-norman.html

IT's also a deadly boring interview full of tendentious garbage... a lot like Norman's books, by all accounts. I read like half a Gor novel as a tween and was booooored (I could tell it was horrible even then) and didn't read on.
-
Side note: I stumbled on the interview because yet another kook posted a long comment on a long-ago blogpost where I marveled at how sad and messed-up it is that there's a "Gorean" lifestyle where weirdos roleplay the social relations and "slavery" system from the Gor books 24/7.
-
(I mean, if you're going to model your life on some SF/fantasy books, you could do a lot better than friggin' Gor.)
-
I stumbled upon the "Goreans" because some ethnonationalist kooks in Korea insist on misspelling Korea in English as "Gorea" because they believe the conspiracy theory that colonial Japan instituted the use of a K so that Korea comes after Japan in the English alphabet.

Al these years later, though, I think the John Norman "Goreans" and the Korean "Goreans" kinda deserve one another.
