@ahimsakerp I dunno, the uniform feels more analogous to an "ASK ME, I WORK HERE" T-shirt on a music store employee, like the one I had to wear working in HMV as an undergrad. Not so much authority as earmarking you as a representative of the company and its policies.

@ahimsakerp But frankly, when I had to ask people to wait their turn (as a music store employee) it wasn't out of a fear of complaints. It was just because it seemed self-evidently wrong that some pushy rando would get special treatment while others were politely waiting. *shrug*

@ahimsakerp That, I think, is the funny thing: how inegalitarian it was, what was happening in front of me, and how I seemed to be the only person involved who saw anything wrong enough to object. (I don't think I was the only person annoyed, just the only one bugged enough to complain.)

@ahimsakerp Like, everyone was so *shocked*. Even my friend, who agreed the guy was in the wrong, was shocked. But I was thinking, "Well, why have a line at all, if any entitled prick can skip to the front?" The fact the guy managing the line didn't seem to see the issue just baffled me.

@ahimsakerp But, you know: especially there, I felt like there was a lot of stuff that had been grafted into Korea as a material society, but which didn't fit the culture. Like traffic law. I mean, there are major underpinning facets of traffic law that don't graft well onto Korean society.

@ahimsakerp My old analogy was how a lot of "foreign" foods seemed to be reconstructed from photos by people who'd never tasted the actual thing itself. In some ways, many institutions felt like that here. Beneath the surface, at odds with fundamental features of their original basis...

@ahimsakerp ... because grafted onto the society from an external source, without much concern for how well it actually locked into place along the underlying cultural norms/expectations, etc. Anyway.
