Yeah, okay, I miss those big hardcover 1980s fantasy art coffee table books. I had a bunch and they were a joy to flip through, taking in all that art. The prose was sometimes good, sometimes just okay, but the art... @ahimsakerp/1494061094498828292

I'm curious to know more about that boom and how/when it busted. I suspect it's just a case of declining sales and rising costs, but details would be interesting. As a kid, I got these mostly as remaindered hardbacks from local mall bookstores, which maybe says a lot.

A few remain in print and available: Brian Froud's various fairy books, especially. But this is a genre of popular publishing that probably fell prey to all kinds of rising costs... Though who knows, maybe boutique editions and crowdfunding could bring them back...

... assuming there are people who miss them like I do, anyway. (It's not like there's a shortage of astonishingly good fantasy art out there, nor of good writers.) That said, I suspect distinctive *narrative* art books (for example Simon Stålenhag's) are an easier sell now.
