    1. So, I was shocked when a student of mine mentioned today that she enjoyed the work of Dietrich Buxtehude. The only person I've ever known who dug Buxtehude's work was my Music History prof in undergrad. How in the world did she ever *hear* of him?

    (Not that Buxtehude is terrible or anything. I mean: youtube.com/watch?v=e39toz6o_8E It's just that history's been less kind to him than to other composers of his era, and few people really get excited about him today.)

      I was *much* less surprised when she explained that Buxtehude is mentioned in Hesse's novel DEMIAN. (Which is sort of to young Koreans what ON THE ROAD or THE BELL JAR or THE CATCHER IN THE RYE used to be to young North Americans.)         (That said, this is still the first time since music school that I've heard someone say, "I like Buxtehude!" so it was still pretty unusual.)
