@mcjulie I also want to ask whether Mother's Day sermons talked about broken relationships between mother and daughter? Parent-child relationships usually involve at least some trauma & brokenness, regardless of each's sex or gender.
-
@mcjulie (That's a tangent though and not your main point. I'm just curious. I imagine mother's day was about platitudes and pedestals? Then again, I probably am guessing that because in Catholic sermons, it was always "Mary, Mary, Mary!" on mother's day...)
-
@mcjulie Also, I am a bit amazed by the post next to it, where you use D&D's silly alignment system to actually say something interesting about ethics and morality and fascism. I've been thinking about it too, lately, in part because I have a character I'm prepping...
-
@mcjulie ... for whom some of these questions are actually pertinent; the main issue is that for him, the whole alignment system of D&D is anthropocentric. He's "true Neutral" (and a Druid) but only in that reference frame.
-
@mcjulie When he looks at a Paladin, he sees someone whose definition of "Goodness" is horrifically inadequate to the world they live in, because it excludes so much. Which, huh, kinda is the issue with Lawful Good or Lawful Neutral: it's easy to be that if you exclude anything you like.
-
@mcjulie Which I think aligns with your point about how Lawfulness and Goodness are really often a subjective semblance of those things, because the exclusions are invisible to huge masses of people (and thus self-reinforce).
-
@mcjulie Which is of course a conscious part of game alignment—the creators knew that it was human-centric. Actually, in the OSR retroclone I tend to run, humans are explicitly earmarked as 99.999% Neutral. (Except Clerics (Lawful fanatics) and Magic-Users (Chaotic reality-breakers).)
-
@mcjulie In a Nature-centric context, he's for balance, but... in his world, he's active and indeed even violently engaged to protect the wilds from the destructive encroachment of civilization and the "civilized" cult driving that encroachment/destruction.
