          @mcjulie As for misapplication of Occam's Razor... I mean, yeah, it does require speculation, but tends to short circuit fantastical speculation. Simplest possible explanation (according to known physical law, right?)

        @mcjulie That is a qualitatively different kind of speculation. It's still speculation: one is stuck with "Maybe it was a trick of the light?" but at least we're not the mercy of every random thing our brains are miswired to take as possibly credible explanations.

      @mcjulie I mean, as opposed to, "Maybe it was a spirit messing with you?" requires multiple nested speculations involving things we have no evidence even exist, where tricks of the light, we know very well and experience regularly, if we know what to look for.

    @mcjulie I mean, I know you know that, it's just... I bristle at the idea of someone speculating naturalistic explanations for things being basically the same as someone saying, "Ghosts? Aliens? A malignant force possessing the house itself?" That's false equivalency, isn't it?
